 Another Day Goes By 12/14/2005

(Limerick Practice)

*) For a second, it occurred to me on the Vancouver trip that my blog had passed its anniversary. I was supposed to write something for that. The next second it slipped off my mind. I am not a big fan of anniversary, or in that sense, any memorial activity. Nor is the one-armed, bald and obnoxious doctor from "ER". Once he chided his coworkers for having birthday party during business hour. What's his name? Robert something. As I recall, he later died of helicopter crash. (To be accurate, he was hit by a helicopter. He is a skilled surgeon though, but it seems almost everyone dislikes him. However, he did save lives, probably much more than other doctors. )

*) I am roughly 36 hours away from my vacation back to China. The only thing I want now is to keep an even keel, with nothing out of ordinary. For some reason, my coworkers are getting more jitters than I am. MQ keeps asking me .... W & W are insisting on letting me finish ... VJ is prying all the known and unknown issues I might have. Even the AC became frazzled, the lab was smothering. Unfortunately I was not able to remote desktop to the test machine, so I have to stand in the lab and take the heat, literally.

*) QJ is working along with me in the lab. At 5:00 pm, he took off as usual to pick up his daughters from pre-school. (Don't get me wrong, QJ has a much earlier start every weekday. He is a hard working guy.) At the moment, the still and fiery air did bring my thoughts back to another 5:00 pm when I was just a kid in elementary school. I was riding a bus to home. The bus passed by the gate of a State-Owned garment factory. I saw scores of young workers, lining up behind the factor gate. At 5:00 sharp, the bell was set off to signal the end of business hour. The gate was sliding open, and those workers rushed out, probably to pick up their kids or go on a date. I bet they are off work long before 5 O'clock. And I bet that factory is either out of business or privatized by now. Back then when job security was a premise, working was rarely taken seriously. I begin to sweat now. I have to step out of the lab to breathe easy. I am serious.

" Theodore Roosevelt, widely regarded as a model of presidents and a great American leader, had this to say about immigration. In 1907 he said, quote, In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such men because of creed or birthplace or origin. But this is predicated on a man's becoming, in very fact, an American and nothing but an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American but something else also isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization just as much as it excludes any foreign flag in a nation to which we are hostile. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language, and we have room for but one sole loyalty, and that is a loyalty to the American people. " (Ref[1])

*) Some fellows are called "fellow" for a reason. One of this kind of fellow can be duly found at Ref[1]. I have never realized that superabundance of vocabulary could as well cause brain damage until I was at the receiving end of this speech. My apology to those whom I ever mistreated with sesquipedalians.(Sorry, I did it again.) I hold deep admiration to the fellow who knit sentences so dexterously.

*) Obviously US couldn't help gloating over France's recent misfortune. However, US has got her own social disparity to worry about, as those folks at Big Easy can attest this past hurricane season.

 Share Pictures Online 12/03/2005

I used to be a loyal user of HPPhotos.com. The reason has to do with my HP Digital Camera. However, HP recently closed the site and my account was transfered to Snapfish.com. (It seems this site is also operated by HP) Half of my online pictures are lost during the migration. And from now on, if I choose to share albums, those who want to see the share have to be members of snapfish.com as well. Another sign that HP is aging ungraciously.

The instant alternative I have could be MSN Space, which offers 30MB storage. Yahoo Photo is another option, but it does not offer full size view to free members.

If it is any consolation, I am not photogenic.
